Opportunity, Decision and other Challenges.

The video below looks at a sporting incident where rules may result in determining outcomes that raise issues of fairness, honesty and justice, three topics of philosophical and social interest.

Jana Fett v Caroline Wozniacki Who won at the Australian Open? from QJ Blend on Vimeo.

Opportunity, Decision and other Challenges.

In the third set of this second round meeting between Jana Fett and Caroline Wozniacki the match was virtually over with Jana Fett having two match point opportunities to move into the third round. With the first of those match points Fett served what some believed was an ace, but the serve was called out by a line judge.

That decision by the line judge determined the outcome of the set, and the match.

The "challenge " system is designed to give the players the opportunity to see a review of the serve via video technology to determine if the judgement of the call was accurate.

At the stage of a match point, the rules allow the call of the line judge to go unchallenged. There is a great deal of money, prestige, confidence and a players future at stake. The technology to be certain is avaliable to make an accurate assessment.
YET A SUBJECTIVE UNTESTED JUDGEMENT IS ALLOWED TO STAND.

Some will simply say that the player had the opportunity but took the wrong decision. The rules are clear and the rules should stand.

That is clearly the opinion of those who fear the truth. If the truth is there to be seen why not have a look?

There are many philosphical conundrums to consider here.
